World Champion Qualities: Special Amici Award

From Wikipedia:  A world championship is generally an international sports competition open to elite competitors from around the world, representing their nations, and winning such an event will be considered the highest or near highest achievement in the sport or contest.

The Amici per la Vita Niagara Cycling Club is honoured to have a World Champion as one of our members but even MORE honoured at his selfless and generous donation this year.  As we introduced at our AGM, Gord Singleton  has donated one of his World Championship Medals for the creation of a special "Amici" award.

THIS AWARD WILL BE PRESENTED ANNUALLY AT OUR YEAR END BANQUET.

THE RECIPIENT WILL BE THE AMICI THAT BEST REPRESENTS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CLUB AND IT’S MEMBERSHIP THROUGH CYCLING.

HOW DO YOU BECOME “AMICI” OF THE YEAR?

YOUR PEERS MUST SUBMIT YOUR NAME - SUBMISSIONS BEGIN NOW!  THE AMICI MEMBER SUBMITTING THE NAME MUST PUT YOUR NAME FORWARD ALONG WITH A BRIEF EXPLANATION OR REASON WHY YOU DESERVE A NOMINATION AND SHOULD SIGN THE SUBMISSION FORM.   YOU CAN BE NOMINIATED MORE THAN ONCE!

AT THE END OF THE YEAR THE AMICI WHO HAS ACCUMULATED THE MOST NOMINATIONS WILL BE THE RECIPIENT.

YOU CAN USE THE FORM ATTACHED, OR CHECK WITH YOUR RIDE LEADER FOR A FORM.     FILL IT OUT AND HAND IT TO YOUR RIDE LEADER OR SEND BY EMAIL TO nbt@cogeco.net

We are working on an electronic version of the form, but in the meantime, let's get some nominations coming in.   Did someone buy you a coffee, fix a tire, hang back and ride with you?   Do you see a fellow Amici displaying Championship Qualities?   Make it known!  Here's your chance to tell them "Hey Man, Thanks..."

Things you need to know:   You will require a valid passport. You may want to register your bike before leaving, if you have not done so already. To register with customs here is our advice: For any expensive items (especially your bike, but also cameras, lap tops, etc.), you may wish to complete an Identification of Articles For Temporary Exportation (for Canadians going into the US). You can obtain this form at the border or at your local customs office. Have the form(s) stamped at the border or prior to your trip. The serial number of the item is recorded on the form and proves the origin of the item. Otherwise the item could be dutiable/taxable. Once completed and stamped keep with the item and use for future trips

"Rain, Rain, Go Away" and God Save the Queen!

Please not another rainout this weekend! We're hoping for the best but making plans in case it happens. Scott May will conduct another basement maintenance session at our 6279 Huggins Street location starting at 10:00 am on Saturday morning, upstairs in the boardroom a few of us will be watching the royal wedding with tea and scones available...not really, but we can help out anyone who may have some tech questions, such as how to create a route and post it on our website. So let's make use of the time if you're interested...after all "We'll never be Royals"!

Continuing with the royal theme for our weekend, Queen Victoria has given us the opportunity to reschedule our Saturday rides to Monday morning at 8:30 am if it rains on Saturday! Let's plan for all contingencies this weekend.

"God Save the Queen!"

Wedding Bells: Wedding Belles & Beaus Sat. May 19, 2018 Ride

Special Event for our Royal Watchers, Ladies and Gents invited!

Saturday, May 19th:  11am

This late staring ride will be a C-B pace for those of you who are going to get up early, watch the Royal Nuptuals, nap and then want to ride!

Meaghan and Harry get married. Let's celebrate in style. Helmet and other "wedding" decorations encouraged!

Carolyn, our own "kilo-queen" will lead us on a 50k meader, likely to NOTL.

The Sound of Silence: Do not be Silent! RIDE!

Support the APLVNCC as we ride en-masse, in the Ride of Silence.   This is a Global Event held every year on the third Wednesday of May where groups of cyclists ride a slow procession-style ride of 10K, in silence, honouring those injured or killed while on the road on their bicycles.

APLVNCC is a sponsor of this event so we need to see you all out.  You are part of the Niagara area community, the Club and our Roads.  Let's show the Community we CARE.

  • When:  Wednesday, May 16th @ 7pm, Arrive after 6pm to Register and get a flag affixed to your bike
  • Where:  Firemen's Park, start and finish.   Refreshments available post ride (hotdogs BBQ'd by volunteer Firemen)

What is the Cost of Silence?  The WHO Global Status Report On Road Safety 2015: Road traffic accidents caused more than 1.25 million deaths and more than 20-50 million injuries each year; Road traffic deaths among cyclists are 50,000.

This is close to home happening on streets we ride, and to people we know.

See you Wednesday

Rainy Day Tires and Tech Geeks

Should the dark clouds persist and postpone our Saturday, May 12th ride, we will offer a "downstairs"  TIRE CHANGING seminar session with Scott May and an "upstairs" TECHNOLOGY session with some of the tech geeks from our Club.

When:  Saturday, May 12th, 10:00 - 11:30am

Where: Klein Developments Building, 6279 Huggins Street, Niagara Falls

Whether you want to learn how to create a route on Strava, upload to the website or your Garmin or change a flat in under 10 minutes, we will have someone on hand to help.

Up or down, bring your laptop or tablet or bike or just your questions and we'll try and not waste a rainy morning.
