Message from Rick @ Mac’s bike – Sept. 25th Charity Ride Opportunity benefiting Start Me Up Niagara
I am very excited to formally announce that the fifth annual 100,000,000mm cycle challenge will be held on Sunday, September 25th. Last year we had a great ride with 30 riders completing the 100 km route. It is my hope we can get over 40 riders out this year. Over the past four years we have raised over $40,000 for the Crohn’s and Colititis Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the YWCA Niagara Region, and the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara. This year we were once again looking to assist another local charitable organization and so we will be riding for Start Me Up Niagara. In addition, this year’s ride is dedicated to the memory of my father, John Lombardi, who recently passed away. He was very proud of the great efforts of all our riders each year and he is certainly missed here at Mac’s.
Start Me Up Niagara works with individuals facing significant life challenges such as addiction, mental illness, poverty, homelessness and unemployment. They provide opportunities to improve health, increase community integration and support employment. They operate a drop in/outreach centre that hosted 33,000 drop in visits, and served 14,000 hot lunches last year. Through their partnership with Out of the Cold they deliver a hostel program for those in need during the coldest months of the year. Their housing preservation program works to break the cycle of homelessness for people who have experienced frequent episodes of homelessness and those who are at risk of losing their housing. On last year’s ride we had the privilege of having Dean Birmingham ride with us. I personally enjoyed the time I spent riding with Dean, and I learned quite a bit about the great services that Start Me Up Niagara provide as Dean has benefited from those services. I think they are an excellent partner for us and I look forward to working with them.
It is our goal to raise at least $12,500 for this very worthy organization, and we can’t do it without your help. If you think you are up for the challenge, we would love to have you join us. We will be providing a bicycle to anyone that needs one. Bicycles are limited, so availability will be determined on a first come, first serve basis.
If you are interested or know someone that might be interested in riding please email me at rick@macsbikesniagara.com and I will send you a registration form. Please feel free to send this email to anyone that you think might be interested. There is a $30 registration fee. This fee will cover a t-shirt, snacks, drinks, and food after the ride. Any money left over from the registration fees will be donated to Start Me Up Niagara. Lunch will be provided by Subway Sandwiches in Ridgeway.
Once you have registered, we will provide you with a pledge form and information on how your sponsors can support you with an online donation. Unlike many similar rides, we do not put a minimum donation amount in order to ride, but we strongly encourage each rider to try to raise at least $200. Just asking a few family members for their support should get you close to that total.
If anyone knows a business that might be able to donate some snacks or water please let me know. Also, if you know a business that may want to sponsor the ride, please let me know. We will be printing our sponsors on the back of our t-shirts and all the donations we can get will help us achieve our $12,500 goal.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this email. Hopefully, we will see you on the 25th of September. If you have any questions please contact me (289-969-6227).
