Training Day 2019

Come join us for Training Day - 155K at a B/C pace

Let Rick or Bev know if you are planning on joining. PLANS ARE SET!

What: Ride to Toronto, Go Train Back

When: Sunday, July 28. 7am

Where: Start  Firemen's Park

We will ride along a pre-defined route to Toronto, riding along the top of the escarpment to the "Punch Bowl", down the escarpment to the Lakeshore, and then along Lakeshore to Toronto.  We are picking up as many paths and trails as possible - this is a trip about the journey.  Our final destination is Union Station where we will catch the 4:18pm return train back to NF.

The Go Train stops in Union, Exhibition, Port Credit, Oakville, Burlington, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls and one-way tickets are under $20. This Go Train has a car specifically for Bicycles and riders only.

Distance is 140K aprox to Toronto center.  Route proposed:  https://www.strava.com/routes/14848494

If we miss the 4:18pm train, we will have to depart at 8:10pm. The train ride is 2 hours.

Riders can join us along the route to participate in a portion of the journey but be prepared to spend the day with your cycling friends. Upon return we will head over to Counterpart to celebrate our accomplishments.

Train information:  https://www.biketrain.ca/toronto-niagara.  You can buy tickets at Union Station and use a presto card if you have one.  We do not need to buy them ahead of time.

Group and stop details:

The group so far is Rick & Bev, Jarnail, Robert G, Nelson, Paedric and Marcus and possibly Carolyn.

The first stop @ Punch Bowl Market & Bakery is actually at 65K.  Market cafe opens @ 9 so we should be there when they open.

We may stop near Port Credit @ 101K  near Snug Harbour, where we may have a picnic delivered for lunch.

Sunday, July 21 Social Ride

Social Sunday!  We will take the backroads out to the marina for toast and tea   We will come home straight down the parkway and up river road   Approximately 65k.

MTB Rides Return

It was a wet spring, but the trails are finally dry and ready to ride.

Beginner's ride clinic/refresher Sunday, July 28th at 8:00AM.

We will be going over those skills which have been a bit rusty or learn new ones.

I will set up a circut course where you will be able to utilize the skills that you have learned. My hope is that the course will result in about 20k of total riding.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Texas Heat Hacks: Saturday, July 20th 7am start time

Scott offered us all some advice last year when it heated up.   One thing we know helps is early morning riding and to help with that ALL RIDES THIS SATURDAY, JULY 20 WILL BEGIN AT 7AM and pace and distance will be adjusted due to the "very humid" 37+ degrees coming

Here is Scott's advice:

As many of you know, I am from Texas. In the years I have been cycling there, I have learned a few things about riding in the heat. Aside from hydrating, using sunscreen, and riding early in the morning, here are a few hacks which are not as obvious which I have learned in my time riding in summer temperatures approaching 40 Degrees Celcius.

Texas Heat Hacks

1.Hydrate using a tablet or powder. If you want to not have sticky residue on your bottles and frame, use one that does not have sugar in it, such as NUUN tablets. Aim to drink 1 bottle per hour. (Carry extra tablets with you and consider one just water, which you can always dump over your head if needed)

2.Keep moving-often, when you stop, the breeze you get when riding stops. If you are at the top of a hill, keep soft pedaling while the group catches up, rather than stopping completely. Also try and use this tactic with traffic lights or other things that stretch the group out.

3.Adjust your pacing- particularly when climbing, it is much easier to overheat, so start climbing under your threshold to avoid blowing up. It's harder in hot weather to recover quickly.

4.Hydrate- Drink before the ride, during the ride and also after the ride. Many people forget to hydrate afterward, but if you don't rehydrate after the ride, your recovery will be longer.

5.Spend time outdoors- It's not obvious, but the more time you spend outdoors in the heat, the better your body will adapt to hot weather. And remember, black absorbs the heat so stay away from your black kit.

6.Monitor your fellow riders- Sometimes people are more focused on the ride than hydrating or coping with the heat. It's important to look at fellow riders' bottles to make sure they are emptying, and to see the signs of overheating, such as redness, loss of breath or inability to lower their heart rate. Make sure you know the signs of heatstroke or heat exhaustion.

Love the heat! At least it's only a few months, rather than 6 months down in Texas!

Keep cool on the roads just like Scott May.

Tour de France

Today is the 10th Day of the Tour de France.  Those guys ride 3840 KM in total.  Wow.

If you have been following along our calendar challenge for these 21 days, we have asked you to ride a bit more.  Take your bike to the grocery store, or work, or your friend's house. Ride to the Ride!  Many of you are doing just this and it is fun to watch.
These KM will be collected (on the honour system) and recorded on the leader board to add to the club rides.

Your turn:  Please email me the total EXTRA KM you have ridden from Saturday July 6 up until Sunday, July 14 pm for our first weeks entry.
Once we have the totals we will communicate out last weeks Tour leader!

Let's have fun out there.
