Tuesday Jul 31: 6pm Super Elite Advanced Pace Line Clinic

Super Elite Advanced Pace Line Clinic:

On Tues, Jul 31 as part of the evening A/B ride, Paul will be leading a Super Elite Advanced Pace Line Clinic (SEAPLC).
Who should attend? (1) Everyone who is pretty good at riding a pace line, or think they are, or want to be; (2) Everyone who wants to be a doorman, or sit in the armchair, or understand what Paul calls “buffering”; (3) Everyone who wonders how Paul hangs on when he’s not as fit as anyone else on the ride.
Who should not attend? If you don’t get why pace lines exist (i.e. if you are in “pace line denial”), or don’t like riding close to other riders, or can never figure out where the wind is coming from, or think you know everything already, please don’t come. But don’t worry- Paul will lead a Easy Going Fun Learn to Ride in a Group Clinic (EGFLRGC) if enough people ask.
What will we be doing? Paul will lead a 45-km-ish ride and we will work on pace line skills at a strictly controlled pace (i.e. no faster than Paul likes to go.) In this never before offered and probably never to be repeated clinic, Paul will spill every secret he’s learned in 40+ years of riding.
Be there! Firemen’s Park, 6 pm, July 31!

Amici per la Vita Award

Hi everyone,

Just a friendly reminder to keep submitting your nominations for our year end selection of "Amici Per La Vita " member of the year.

I've received 22 nominations to date, you can nominate the same person more than once.

Remember, the award is for the Member that best suits the true meaning of being our Amici (friend)

It's quite simple,  email me at nbt@cogeco.net, we need the name of the nomination, your name as the nominator and a brief description of what exemplary act your Amici has done to enhance our group.

Thank you,  Gordon

6 Texas Heat Hacks

As many of you know, I am from Texas. In the years I have been cycling there, I have learned a few things about riding in the heat. Aside from hydrating, using sunscreen, and riding early in the morning, here are a few hacks which are not as obvious which I have learned in my time riding in summer temperatures approaching 40 Degrees Celcious.

Texas Heat Hacks

1.Hydrate using a tablet or powder. If you want to not have sticky residue on your bottles and frame, use one that does not have sugar in it, such as NUUN tablets. Aim to drink 1 bottle per hour.

2.Keep moving-often, when you stop, the breeze you get when riding stops. If you are at the top of a hill, keep soft pedaling while the group catches up, rather than stopping completely. Also try and use this tactic with traffic lights or other things that stretch the group out.

3.Adjust your pacing- particularly when climbing, it is much easier to overheat, so start climbing under your threshold to avoid blowing up. It's harder in hot weather to recover quickly.

4.Hydrate- Drink before the ride, during the ride and also after the ride. Many people forget to hydrate afterward, but if you don't rehydrate after the ride, your recovery will be longer.

5.Spend time outdoors- It's not obvious, but the more time you spend outdoors in the heat, the better your body will adapt to hot weather.

6.Monitor your fellow riders- Sometimes people are more focused on the ride than hydrating or coping with the heat. It's important to look at fellow riders' bottles to make sure they are emptying, and to see the signs of overheating, such as redness, loss of breath or inability to lower their heart rate. Make sure you know the signs of heatstroke or heat exaustion.

Love the heat! At least it's only a few months, rather than 6 months down in Texas!
